Only $ 12 per year. All right. Extra zeros do not need to be added. True, it will be possible to actually use it in just a few minutes.

Former employee of Goodness Corporation Sanmey Ved searched for a good domain name in the .com zone through the Google Domains service and suddenly stumbled upon a Google.com lot for sale. Moreover, the service offered to buy one of the most recognizable domain names on the Internet not for billions, not for millions, and not even for hundreds of American dollars - for only $ 12 per year.

The Vedas, without hesitation, pressed "buy" and checked the balance of his credit card. Making sure that the money was debited from her, he went to the Google Search Console and noticed a message about adding a Google.com domain. However, the lucky one did not rejoice for long. A few minutes later he received a notification that the order was canceled.

Kind Corporation was able to quickly and successfully fix the problem and re-secure Google.com because it owns the Google Domains domain registration service. Otherwise, the incident would become a source of serious headache for top managers of the search giant.

It is not clear what exactly made possible the acquisition of a famous domain by an ordinary webmaster. Representatives of Google declined to comment on what happened, noting only that the corporation began an internal investigation into the incident.

List of Verified Registrars

There are many different registrar companies on the Internet where you can register a domain. I recommend taking domains only from official verified registrars.

  • REG.RU (recommended) - Registrar No. 1 in Russia. I buy only from him.
  • 2domains.ru is an official partner of Reg.ru.
  • RU-center is the largest professional registrar.
  • Beget.ru is a good hosting and domain name registrar.

There are projects that can lure you with various promotions and discounts, offering to buy a domain very cheaply or even for free as a gift for some kind of service.

If you want to chase a freebie, then carefully read the terms of such promotions so as not to be left empty-handed later. Be sure to see the conditions of purchase, to whom the address is registered, and what will be the cost of renewal.

Usually domain names are bought for a year. After a year, they will need to be renewed and the renewal amount is times as much.

I use only one registrar, so I made instructions on his example. For others, the buying process may differ, but the principle is the same. I think you can easily figure it out, if anything, write in the comments, write a separate instruction.

What is a domain name?

When you want to create a website, you need to have a domain name. But what the hell is this domain name?

This is basically a string of recognizable words that, when entered in a browser, redirect the user to your server IP address.

You see that when a website is created, it often has a unique address, known as a domain name server (DNS), which often looks like this:

It is very difficult to remember and type. That is why a unique domain name will be easier for users to remember and type.

For more technical information about the domain name, please read Jerry's guide.

Domain Name Suggestions

Your domain name is your identity. This is how people find you, the name of the customers goes to others.

Needless to say, nothing is more important.

Take your business a step in the right direction to choose the perfect domain name - here are some tips for finding cool domain names.

  • Keep it short and easy to remember (our domain “The Secret of Web Hosting Revealed” is a bad example!)
  • Avoid Trademarked Names
  • Get .com or .net whenever possible.
  • Don't be afraid to put a word or use a compound word (think of FaceBook, YouTube, Google, LinkedIn)
  • Write it down and read it again before purchasing (example - be very careful if your company name is “Dickson Web”)
  • Relevant Keyword *

* Note. You don’t need a keyword in your domain name to work well with Google. But it’s a good idea to put your domain name around a keyword, as it will give visitors a quick glimpse of your website.

Foreword

When you maintain a page on a social network or a blog on someone else’s site, you can be a victim of other people's decisions at any time, whether by removing the walls of posts, inserting advertising posts mixed with yours or deleting your account altogether.

Businesses, bloggers, and groups of people with common interests need their own sites to create an independent island in the information world, where only you decide how long the site will operate.

To place a site on the network, you need three components:

1. Hosting. Storage of files and databases of the site. You can buy a cheap and relatively easy to manage shared hosting (shared hosting in another terminology), or you can get confused and purchase a server. I advise you to look at my note How to choose a VPS hosting - a few tips to understand the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to hosting sites.

2. Domain. This word has several meanings. In this context, this is the name you enter to open the site. Actually, this article will tell about how to purchase it. I’ll even buy it before your eyes to clearly show how this system works. And, of course, I’ll show you how to connect the IP address of the server and the domain so that the site opens in a browser.

3. CMS (Content management system). This, to put it simply, is a program that, when hosted, will allow you to create pages that visitors will see. For example, WordPress. Read more in the article What is WordPress and why is it important.

How to choose a domain name

A domain is not only a site name, but a way to get to it. Therefore, it is important to come up with a name that:

a) Easy to remember. The shorter the better. Use the letters of the English alphabet. Numbers and hyphens are undesirable. Do not try to mentally distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters - this is an unnecessary complication. When words are recognizable, the domain is read easily by BezTakogoKoverkanya. A domain name with the Cyrillic alphabet (tipatogo.rf) can be bought as a mirror of the main site, it is better not to use it as the main one.

b) Easy to type on the keyboard. Including the phone. Most of the users are sitting on mobile devices, so again avoid numbers (on mobile keyboards the way to enter them is not always obvious, usually requiring holding the top row of keys) and letters that are far away from each other. Try to ensure that the letters are on the same line and their set does not require throwing a finger in different directions.

c) Does not mention other brands. Other intellectual property is better not to use. If you sell sparkling water, you do not need to create a website kak-pepsi.ru - claims of the copyright holder are possible. Develop your own brand.

Many sites selling domains have primitive name generators. I advise you not to indulge, but to go to free service ru.yodo.name and make a list of domains in it.

This is the most thoughtful way: you can connect thematic dictionaries, specify keywords, name length, and immediately check for availability to purchase.

If name generators are not needed, check the availability of the domain where horrible is not necessary. You never know, suddenly the owners of such a “checker” will also like the domain wildly and they will buy it earlier. Check on the site of one of the accredited registrars, for example nic.ru.

Anatomy of Domain Names

Why do we need domains? Ten years ago, I would write that domains associate a server’s digital address with a friendly name to make life easier for people. What can I enter into the address bar of the browser a digital address of the form 5.255.255.50 and you would have opened, for example, Yandex. Now this is not working (almost).

Now they can be tied to one IP address hundreds of thousands domain names. And vice versa - different visitors can open a site from different digital addresses. Therefore, now domains are not only simplify opening sites they are necessary for their discovery.

Domain name in the address of the site page

A domain name is not an entire address.

In the line of the form https://glashkoff.com/category/webdev/ the domain is just glashkoff.com. I tell this because I see a misunderstanding. I was contacted twice with a problem: when buying a domain, they bought an SSL certificate, expecting the site to open using the secure HTTPS protocol (https: // at the beginning of the address instead http: //) This is normal, because the domain and protocol are two different things, each set up separately.

Why HTTPS cannot be dispensed with on the modern Internet, I described in a note Benefits of the HTTPS protocol. AND buy a certificate is not required for this.

A domain name consists of several levels separated by periods.

In the address of glashkoff. com the first level (zone) will be. com, the second is glashkoff. Before the first level there is a zero (root) point at the end of the address. Usually they don’t write it.

As the owner of a second-level domain, nothing prevents me from adding the names of the following levels of the form eto.dmitriy.glashkoff.com.

Where to buy a domain

For this article, I bought a domain on dnar.ru.

The vast majority of hosting companies have a service. One payment is convenient to pay for the placement of the site, but this is not an economical option. Registrars and resellers are full, prices vary widely, it makes sense to look for the best deal. Take a look at the updated list of the cheapest registrars on Ru.Board.

For a reasonable price, creating a first-level domain of the form vasyapupkin (without any “.com”) will fail. Theoretically, this is possible under the ICANN New gTLDs program, but ... do you really need it? But to buy a second-level domain name in the zones .com, .ru, .org, etc. - please.

What you need to know before buying a domain

1. It needs to be extended. “Purchase” is an incorrect term. Actually you him rentusually one year. A month before the end of registration, the registrar will send you letters reminding you to pay the money. If you miss the payment, the domain status will change from “active” to “hold” and the site will stop opening (even with paid hosting), after a while - to “release” and then “wait for deletion”. Specify terms of stay in the different statuses at your registrar. It’s better not to tempt fate and deposit more money in advance by turning on the auto-renewal service - all normal registrars have it.

2. May be used and with a bad history. The reasons why the owner does not renew the domain and it becomes available for re-registration are very different: from the loss of relevance to sanctions from search engines and government agencies. There is no reliable way to check before purchasing whether a domain is in all possible blacklists. Theoretically, you can take the domain out of any repression, in practice it is too long and expensive, so look through the web.archive.org into the past, whether the site existed before and with what content. If there was something illegal or morally unethical - it is better not to buy or consult with specialists in search engine promotion. There are also accessibility check services in Russia (2ip.ru/rkn-blacklist/, etc.).

3. Remember Whois and Private Person. Whois is public domain information (for IP, too), which shows the contacts of the service registrar and a way to contact the owner. Sometimes there may be all the ins and outs about buying a domain up to the address of residence. To hide personal information, the Private Person service is activated, free of charge in .ru and .рф zones. It should be enabled by default for all owners-individuals in the zones .ru, .su, .rf because of the law on personal data, but for some reason they forget about it (proof).

Beware of opaque prices

In Russia, 46 accredited registrars (list) and hundreds, if not thousands, of resellers. Some poke cost information renewals in hard-to-reach wilds of sites. If you see only the registration price - think twice whether it is worth contacting such a seller.

On the main page of the registrar tasty prices can be hung with excellent discounts.

And a year later, when it comes time to renew the domain, it turns out that the cost of renewal is three times more expensive than registration!

Formally, this is not a fraud of buyers, but a bad marketing technique. The cost of renewal is indicated on a separate page, and even with the division by tariffs, and you can not immediately understand what your tariff is.

Each time I purchase a domain, I review the prices and the aforementioned Ru-Board forum thread. But for me the main thing is not the low price, but the visible honesty registrar. Therefore, today I chose dnar.ru.

The most delicious prices are active.domains - 139 rubles per RU. Unfortunately for them, my caution is stronger than greed. At the address of this legal entity in Kaliningrad there are several more companies with similar sites and differentdomain prices. Who knows why this is done, it’s better not to risk it.

Then I signed up with the reseller coopertino.ru, which has beautifully painted purchase and renewal prices - both for 185 rubles. for RU. Alas, there was an overlay with the introduction of money: Yandex.Money was not on the payment method list, despite the declared support for it (the icon on the main one). Technical support was silent for more than a day, then offered to drop money to the Yandex.Wallet number, which was not mentioned on the site. Due to a strange secret payment method, they arrivedderci told them.

At Dnar, domains in .ru cost 159 rubles (including fees of payment systems, in fact, paid 166.95 rubles). But on .com a little expensive - 1075 rubles, you can find half the price, so glashkoff.com I will not transfer to them.

How to buy a domain

You need to make money and pay. Actions are similar to buying goods in online stores.

Unfortunately and fortunately, the admin panel of my chosen reseller is self-written. Unfortunately, because most resellers use the ISPmanager control panel and the screenshots below will not help you much. Why fortunately? The ISPmanager interface got stuck somewhere in the early 2000s and any other admin panel is much simpler and more convenient, so I'm glad.

First you need to deposit money into the account by pressing (+). Do not buy a loan.

First, in ISPmanager, go to the "Payers" section, click "Create" there, fill out a form with small text fields, then click "Create" in the "Finance" - "Payments" section, choose a payment method, payer ... In general, you understand why I don't like ISPmanager so much.

Then in the “Domains” section - the “Register a domain” button.

Then specify the domain name.

If he is not busy with anyone (I hope you have previously checked the availability of the domain on the registrar's main page?), Step 2 will appear. And here, from the Dnar side there is a small oversight - there was no daw on the Private Person service, I had to install it myself. Everything else can be left by default.

If you have deposited more than one registration into your account, turn on domain auto-renewal and forget about renewing for the next couple of years.

After clicking "Register a domain" in the best tradition, we queue:

I did not wait long, despite the late evening of Sunday. It seems that the software still has no days off. After about ten minutes, a letter of the following content arrived in the mail:

Please always pay attention to the contents of the letter sent during domain registration. Accredited registrars do not indulge in this, but some bad resellers in the “Person” section of the Whois record indicate who did not buy, but themselves. This usually happens with stocks of the form "Buy hosting from us, get your domain for free!". The nuance here is that according to ICANN rules, the owner is a person or organization indicated in "Person". This allows you to regain control of the domain (get the password for the admin panel) if the reseller has closed and the service has gone to the parent registrar. And that is why, when registering a domain, you must provide reliable information about yourself.

If the registrar indicated in the Whois, Person section, not you, but the left person or yourself, break them in technical support and demand to change the data. Otherwise, it turns out that after six months your mega-successful online store will be in the wrong hands.

Accredited registrars do not allow themselves to do this (but their prices are high), so in which case you can also complain to someone from whom the reseller purchases domains.

What to do with the domain after registration

Without registering a domain, a site can be opened on your PC by adding the following line to the c: windows system32 drivers etc hosts file:

Where x.x.x.x is the IP server with the site. Then your (and only yours!) Computer will know which server to access when entering the moisait.ru address. In fact, you need to buy domains so that such a record is registered on all DNS servers in the world and every computer knows where to go.

All domain information is stored as records on DNS servers (Domain Name System). There are many name servers, their areas of responsibility are different, the description of the principle of their work will greatly inflate the article.

We connect DNS from Yandex and we get mail in the domain

And where is the mail if I talk about the site? In fact, there is no connection here and you can skip this step. But ... if you connect free DNS servers from Yandex and get a mailbox in the zone @ vashdomen.ru, we will kill three birds with one stone:

The entries necessary for the correct operation of the email will be added automatically, it remains to add an entry for the site to work.

I emphasize: this step is optional. Mailboxes can not be created. Do not delegate servers. Yandex services not to use. I talk about my work scenario, your choice may vary.

To delegate a domain to Yandex, you need to do a few steps. They are not complicated, but they take time, because changing DNS records is not fast, sometimes it is required a day or two to update information.

It is advisable to indicate real names, so that in case of loss of password it is easy to restore access. And configure two-factor authorization (https://passport.yandex.ru/profile/access/2fa?origin=passport_profile) to make it difficult to steal an account.

2. Go to the domain connection page: https://pdd.yandex.ru/domains_add/

There, enter the name of your domain and click "Add Domain".

Adding a domain to a Yandex account

A page appears with a description of how to verify domain ownership. This is so that no one can just add someone else's domain to their account.

How to verify domain ownership

Since the domain has just been registered and does not yet have an entry pointing to the server with the site, the first confirmation method with the file location is not suitable. But the second option is suitable: once we add a record through the registrar’s admin panel, after that you can delegate the domain to Yandex DNS servers and carry out further configuration in a convenient editor.

3. It is necessary to find in the admin area of the registrar, where they bought the domain, the DNS record editor. I have it here:

4. The list of entries is likely to be empty. Add a record of type CNAME, mentioned as one of the ways to confirm ownership.

The terminology in your editor can be very different. I even met just two fields without inscriptions. Most often, first comes the name of the record (host), after its value.

Let me remind you: the name of the yamail- * record and its value (do not forget about the dot at the end!) Are indicated on the domain confirmation page.

After adding you need to be patient. You can safely close the browser and later open the “My Domains” section on pdd.yandex.ru. When Yandex sees the added record (I’ll remind you that the verification may take a day or longer), the status will change to “Waiting for MX records to be installed.”

The second step will offer to make MX-records, but this is not necessary - they will appear after the next step.

5. To switch to the new Yandex name server, you need to climb into the registrar admin area again. This is the last time, I won’t send there anymore!

At the stage of buying a domain, you cannot specify Yandex DNS server, because editing records is not possible without confirmation of ownership rights.

The desired setting may look like lines of records of type NS in the DNS editor or can be specified separately. It all depends on the registrar panel. In my case, NS records are visible, but cannot be edited in the editor. Only through this button in the list of domains:

Change DNS server domain

There I was able to select the item "My list of DNS servers" and specify the server dns1.yandex.net. and dns2.yandex.net. (the points at the end are important!).

Domain delegation on Yandex

After that, editing DNS records through the registrar’s admin panel will not be valid; all changes are made on Yandex servers.

Delegation will also take time, but no one bothers you to edit Yandex name server records in advance.

When a domain is delegated, it looks like this:

Domain status after checking for delegation of name servers

But sometimes the status is “frozen” at the step of confirming domain ownership rights: status “Domain is connected"Without the phrase"... and delegated to Yandex«.

I also encountered this when writing a note. The internal verification service did not see for a long time that dns1.yandex.net is registered in NS records. and dns2.yandex.net. This can go on for several days, but then the domain will receive the long-awaited “medal”, no need to panic.

6. Add mailboxes. The link to this action is in a prominent place on the pdd.yandex.ru page.

Adding a mailbox in your domain

It’s natural for people to be sealed, so that all letters sent to addresses that do not exist in your domain come into the mailbox, go to domain management:

And specify the default address:

As can be seen in the screenshots, I created an admin @ box. Do you know why admin? Because for different purposes they came up with certain names, for example, support @, security @, where real people can send letters (and spammers, but they are now well filtered). And it would be nice for you to have them, suddenly they will send something useful (I have never once).

In order not to produce many boxes, just add the names to the aliases of the existing one:

The list of frequently used names look at Habré: Something about conventions on names of mailboxes.

You just have to log in to the mail (via the mail.yourdomain.com or yandex.ru page) and use it like any other. Or reconfigure the addressing to your main mailbox.

The mailbox will be served by the Yandex mail system, which means it is convenient and familiar to use.

Associating a domain with a server

It remains to indicate in the domain name records what IP address should be addressed.

There are about forty types of DNS records, you can store a lot of different information there, of which I can name more or less popular 11. Now only type A is needed.

BUT (from the word address) stores the IP address of the server via IPv4, by which the browser will find the site. There may be several entries.

Subdomains are also indicated through the A record. Often create with the name "www" and the value of the IP server so that the site opens at the address of the form http://www.moydomen.ru (provided that the server software is configured accordingly). IPs may not necessarily be the same; subdomains of any level can be opened from any servers.

Lifehack: if all your subdomains are hosted on the same server, instead of entries for each, create one with the host name “*”.

AAAA - An analogue of A for IPv6 protocol, has little use so far due to the rare support for IPv6 hosting.

CNAME (Canonical Name or canonical name) - used to create domain aliases (aliases). It is similar to type A, but you need to specify domain names instead of IP, due to the search on DNS servers, opening will be slower. But you can configure forwarding by linking, for example, mail.moydomen.ru and mail.yandex.ru. I do not recommend for use, there may be conflicts with other types of records.

Txt - Multipurpose record for text data. Used to, for example, confirm the right to use a domain.

MX - records are needed to indicate the mail server that is used by the domain. Proper setup requires deep knowledge and it will not work to fit them into this article. Instead, I’ll tell you later how to connect mail from Yandex, where everything is registered in advance.

Srv - needed to configure various services. For example, if you want to start your own Jabber server.

NS - records (at least two) indicate the DNS server on which the administrator can change the owner records.

Pts - the entry is the opposite of type A. It does not associate a domain name with IP, but IP with a domain. In fact, this entry says: "Yes, yes, this IP corresponds to such and such a domain, for sure!". As a rule, it is used to check messages by receiving mail servers so that the message sent from a fake server goes to Spam.

SPF - This entry is specially made to protect against forgery of letters and allows you to list trusted domains in a TXT record.

SOA - the initial record of the zone, indicating on which server the reference information about the domain is stored, contains the contact information of the person responsible for this zone, the time parameters for caching zone information and the interaction of DNS servers.

TTL - time for updating settings. As I wrote above, making changes takes time. As a rule, name servers update information every 86400 seconds (days). Theoretically, the interval can be changed by writing TTL. In practice, it’s better not to touch it, because decreasing the interval will increase the load on the name server. Yes, and many servers simply ignore TTL.

Open the DNS editor. Link to it in a prominent place:

And add an entry with the host “@”, type A. In the value, specify the IP of your server. It should be like this:

After clicking the "Add DNS Record" button, it will be entered into the records on Yandex servers.

A record is enough to open a site. The rest is optional.

This completes the binding. But ... as soon as you try to go to the site, you will get the error "ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED" ("Cannot access the site", "Could not find the IP address of the server").

As I said above, updating the list of records is not a quick matter, wait.

What to do next

So, time has passed, the entries have been made and all the computers in the world, including your neighbors, know from which server to take the site. But the site is not there yet!

If there is no software at all on the server that can render pages, there will be an error “ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED” (“Cannot access the site”, “The site does not allow to establish a connection”):

If you are concerned about installing software on your server or you have shared hosting, there will be an error with code 503 or 404:

Creating a site on the server is a topic for individual notes. For virtual (shared) hosting, one way to install, for VPS / VDS - another. I already wrote instructions for using the free VestaCP control panel (“Configuring VPS for WordPress Quick Work (VestaCP + Nginx + MySQL)”), but as the latest versions are buggy, so I switched to the Webinoly terminal panel, which you can read about in my review:

Therefore, to create a blog on WordPress, just enter a couple of commands in the console:

The first creates a site on WordPress, the second includes the encrypted HTTPS protocol for free.

This is enough for the site to open when you enter the purchased domain name.

Your site creation is likely to happen differently. And, of course, after a lot of work needs to be done:

  1. Choose a design template.
  2. Ensure security by disabling unnecessary features.
  3. Fill the site with content.
  4. Engage in search engine optimization and promotion.

You will find part of the answers right here in the section Creating sites (enjoy reading!), I'll write about the rest later.

Good luck buying your domain and may the power of knowledge be with you!

How to buy a new domain name from a registrar?

Getting your own domain comes down to two ways:

  1. Purchase and register a completely new domain or
  2. By acquiring one that currently belongs to someone else.

There are pros and cons in both directions, but in the end it is up to you to decide whether you prefer to pay for expensive but well-known addresses (domains that are active) or cheaper but less well-known (new domains).

You need to think about how to name your domain.

As mentioned earlier, a really good domain name can be a decisive factor that makes or breaks your brand, so choose it wisely.

1. Verify domain availability

Now that you have decided on a truly amazing domain name, it's time to check if the domain name is available to you or not.

Checking the availability of a domain name is quite simple. You can perform a simple search with one of the domain registrars, or use the Whois search engines to make sure your domain name is available or busy.

If the required domain name is not available, try to see if other extensions are available.

You can check if the domain name is available using Hang.

The best place to buy a domain

You can register a domain, if available. But how do you do that?

The best way is to go to the registrar registration service website. A domain registrar will allow you to register your domain name either in the form of an annual contract or a long-term contract.

Domain registrar sites will charge you a small fee, which usually ranges between $ 10 - $ 15 per year, but high-demand domain names will cost you more on your initial purchase.

Expensive domains can reach thousands of dollars, but after that the renewal fee is pretty nominal ($ 10 - $ 15 per year).

What is escrow domain?

Domain name escrow is basically an independent third-party agent that assists in the process of buying and selling domain names on the Internet. These sites provide buyers with a secure way to purchase domain names from sellers who want to give up their domain name.

There are several escrow domain services, but here are a few that you can check out: Escrow.com, Sedo, and BuyDomains.

How to purchase domains using a deal

Suppose you found a domain name, and you and the seller determined the amount. The riddle becomes: how do you safely pay the money and make sure that the owner transfers the ownership of the domain to you?

This is where the deposit takes place. You can use escrow services to make sure the transaction is running smoothly. How do you actually do this? Here's how:

  1. Set up a deposit transaction between you and the seller
Register an account on the escrow service website and determine the terms of the transaction between you and the seller, which includes the domain name (s) and sale price.
  2. Make a payment to the escrow company
After you have decided on this amount, you make a payment (via wire, credit card or any other method) to the escrow company.
  3. After that, the domain name is transferred from the seller
When the escrow company receives and verifies the payment, they will then instruct the seller to transfer the domain name to you.
  4. Make sure you get domain ownership
You will need to confirm that the escrow company has transferred the ownership of the domain name to you. using WHOIS or WHSR Web Host Spy to check if the owner profile is updated or not.
  5. Seller receives money from escrow site
The escrow company will verify that the domain name has been transferred and they will then transfer the money to the seller, minus their fee. (You can decide in advance which party pays the commission or shares it in the middle).

How to determine the value of a domain name

When you look for a domain name that can usually be found in after-sales services, private sellers, and auction houses, you will notice that their value can range from a few dollars to a six or six seven-digit range.

This may not be the best place to get a domain name if you are just starting out.

How an existing domain gets its price can be determined by a number of factors, such as length, language, trends, and demography. There is no method that would give you the perfect price. However, there are ways to give you a rough estimate of the domain name, and this requires a bit of research on your part.

1- Using the latest domain sales

A good rule of thumb to understand how domains are priced is to look at recent sales. A look at recent sales can give you an idea of what types of domains are purchased and how much.

DNJournal publishes a domain sales report that they regularly update, and it lists the domain names that were recently sold from several premium domain services. When browsing, look for keywords, length, and other related factors to get an idea of how a domain name is ranked.

Domain sales report published in DN magazine (May 2018) Screenshot of the DN Journal domain sales report.

It is important to note that the report covers only a small number of domain names, therefore it is not the most comprehensive list.

2- Using Online Domain Valuation Tools

Another way to determine the value of a domain is through a domain valuation service or online valuation tool. These sites will allow you to enter a specific domain name and provide you with the requested price.

Some of the sites you can check out are Estibot, WebsiteOutlook, and URL Rating.

These sites determine a domain’s value using SEO-related factors such as search ranking, keywords, Alexa ranking, monthly search queries, number of searches, and cost-per-click.

It should be noted that different sites may give you different ratings. A good plan would be to use several different sources and compare them to give you a more accurate assessment of the meaning of the domain name.

Again, there are no final prices for buying a domain name, and you can expect them to fluctuate quite often. If you want a general idea of domain name pricing, you can go to sites like Afternic or Buy Domains to get a feel for the price.

Tune in to the domain, then get started

By now, you should have enough information to help you register your own domain name for your brand or business.

Regardless of the website or the domain registrar's website, owning a domain name should be the first thing you complete before you start living. Once you have it, it's time to focus on building your site.

STEP 1. Registration on the REG.RU service

When registering international zones - this is optional.

STEP 2. Choosing a free domain name

After setting up your account, we proceed to search for a free domain if you did not find it in advance.

At the very top of the site, enter your domain name or the word that you want to use in the name, and click “Pick up”.

The service will immediately show whether it is busy or not, and also offer options in other areas and various variations.

All addresses opposite which there is a button "Choose"are free and you can buy them. Find a suitable one and click on this button.

A window with a button appears below “Register".

STEP 3. Booking and payment

We proceed to the registration process. A window opens with information about the domain and the offer of additional services. I do not recommend choosing anything else.

The only thing you may need is an SSL certificate. What is this, I will tell in a separate article. It will also be available for free a little later.

Scroll through all the sentences and click "Continue".

Now you need to fill in the information about the domain name administrator. If you filled out a questionnaire during registration, then simply select a profile and the data from the questionnaire will appear.

In the next step, you need to register a DNS server. If you have not purchased a hosting space yet, then select “Use registrar servers - FOR FREE”. Then I will show where to change them in order to link the site domain with the hosting.

Click continue and proceed to payment. Domain falls into the basket. You will have 5 days to replenish the balance and pay for the service.

Choose a payment method and pay. After payment, you will need to wait for a while until the domain is activated. A notification will come to the mail.

Domain purchased, what to do next?

Now you need to purchase hosting and bind your domain to it. Hosting is the place where your site data will be stored.

For young sites with little traffic, I can recommend Beget.ru. I have several sites working on it. There were no problems for 3 years, and the cost of 100 - 150 rubles per month is quite inexpensive. How to use it on the blog, I will also analyze in detail.

After you buy a place on the hosting, you need to find its DNS addresses to specify them in the domain settings.

They look as follows.

After you found them, and you received a notification in the mail that the domain is registered, go to your REG.RU personal account. Further “My domains”.

Select your domain from the list. Click on it and fall into its control. Find the link in the right column “DNS servers”.

Come and register the DNS of your hosting.

That's all, now you need to wait a bit, usually from a few minutes to a couple of hours (up to 48 hours), until the information is updated and the domain starts functioning.

I really hope that my instruction helped you and everything worked out. If you have any questions about buying a domain name and the process of its registration, then ask them in the comments below. We will surely help you figure it out and solve the problem.

That's all for today. I wish you success!
